I’ve seen a lot of horrible stuff on my dashboard recently, so I feel like a crash course on Internet etiquette is in order.

  1. It is not okay to send someone threats.
  2. It is not okay to send someone threats with their address attached to it.
  3. It is not okay to stalk someone.
  4. It is not okay to tell someone to die.
  5. It is not okay to scream at people because their opinion is different than yours.
  6. It is not okay to try to justify any of the above by saying, “they deserve it because they’re an asshole” or “other people deal with this on a daily basis.” (Before you read the next point, yes, I’ve seen both of these arguments multiple times.)
  7. Don’t put words in other people’s mouths. Just because someone is against threats doesn’t mean they agree with the reason the threats are being sent. (For example, the John Green/Laci Green/transphobia/islamphobia debacle.)
  8. There is this thing called “civil conversation.” Participate in it. People will be more likely to take you seriously if you are rational and calm than if you write out abuse in caps lock.
  9. There’s also this thing called “The Golden Rule” that got shoved down your throat so much when you were younger that the name makes you want to puke even now. You know, treat others as you would like to be treated? Follow it - even if “the other side” doesn’t.
  10. These rules apply to everyone equally, regardless of age, race, appearance, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, beliefs, intellectual capacity, etc.
